Genesis Chapter One

In the beginning. In the mindblowing dizzying infinite and infinitesimal moment when all matter and energy that there ever was and is or will ever be was folded into itself. When space-time itself was not even a describable thing. THEN. There was God. And God made McFreakin’ everything. Heaven. Earth. Everything in them. Everything on them. Everything seen and unseen.

The ancients imagined chaos, not emptiness. That everything that would become Earth was already there, but a freaking mess. A primordial ooze of disorganisation. Impossibly dark and meaningless, yet somehow deep and full of potential. The presence and power of God was there, too, though. Lurking and hovering, swooshing over it all. Ready to just forking overthrow it all and make something. To make everything.

So God spoke a holy voice into the void. “Light this up.” AND BANG. It was lit a.f. And God saw that light was indeed lit. It was good. Not meh, good. Not “this cheeseburger is fine,” good, but the very definition of Good itself. A New Haven slice of pizza during finals week, good. Jumping in a cool lake on a hot summer day, good. Your crush sliding into your Insta DMs with a flirty message, good ... (Innumerable ridiculous examples of human happiness here)

Looking at the light with celestial shades and into the dark with divine laser vision, God decided the sort this shirt out asap. God said, “This bright time is day, fam.” And “This dark time is night, fam,” because sorting needs labels to keep things in place, and we’re not gonna start needing to KonMari this universe on day one.

And so there was light. And darkness. And every shade of in between. And God saw what was a mess, and what was good. (Because it’s always been some of each, from the beginning, pals.) And there you have it. The First Day.

And then God said, time to raise the roof. I need some water down there, and some water up there, and some air to keep this all in place. And so there was SKY. Because when God says stuff, it happens. Boom, kids, the Second Day.

And then God said, what on earth is this muddy mess, give me some earth, and pulled the water and dry land apart. But kept some Everglades and swamps, because these binaries are always literary devices for a whole spectrum, my dudes. Pay attention the pattern. And God saw land and sea and even swamps and called it Good.

And God said this naked land needs to get dressed up. God told the land to make plants and trees and fruit. Flowers and food. And this was Good too, so the Third Day.

And God said, let’s make a ceiling calendar. Let’s cover this sky roof with sparkling stars to help keep us track of where we are and when we are, cause space-time itself is crawling out of this primordial soup. And you know what, maybe even light up the earth, even in night. Give night the moon as it’s head honcho, nay, it’s big cheese, to sparkle light. And give day the sun as its boss light, to light up the day like a boss. And that was Day Four.

And God said, these plants aren’t enough. I want this water full of things that teem. LO’ ANS VERILY, SCHOOL these waters with fishies. I want birbs all up in here. UP everywhere. Birbs in trees. Birbs over water. Birbs over land. BIRBS UP IN THE WHOLE SKY. And I’m making them for nowsies, but if they want more, laters, they have to make babies themselves. Make all these fish and birbs totally into each other, click-click, and make more after their own kinds.

And with a world full of fishies and birbs, that was the fifth day.

And God looked upon the fishy seas and fowly air and the sad empty land, and said, this land needs critters. Crawling critters. Walking critters. Running critters. CRITTER IT UP.

And this was all adorable. But was not quite enough. There was something else the world was missing. God said, “Let’s make humans. Let’s make humans to reflect us. And they can take good care of all the animals and plants.” So God created humans. As a divine reflections. Images, pictures that hint of what God is like. Males. Females. ALL PEOPLE. THE WHOLE SPECTRUM. God created them. Hes shes and theys. You. Me. All y’all. All we all.

And God gave them a blessing and a job to do. “Go make more people together. Wink, wink. And take care of everything I’ve made. The plants and fish and birbs and critters and one another.”

And God added, “Seriously like, eat the green things and fruits. I made them delicious”

And God looked it all and said, this is very good. The goodest. And that was the Sixth Day.
